China continued to be Ghana’s largest source of imports in 2024, supplying goods valued at approximately GH₵50 billion. This trade relationship highlights China’s significant role in Ghana’s economy, with the Asian powerhouse maintaining a dominant position in various sectors, including manufacturing, construction, and agriculture.
Breakdown of Key Imports
Among the most imported goods from China were agrochemicals, industrial machinery, textiles, electronic appliances, and construction materials. In the second quarter of 2024, agrochemicals alone accounted for GH₵0.98 billion of total imports from China, emphasizing the country’s dependence on Chinese products for its agricultural sector.
China’s supply chain also covered diverse products, with the top five imported goods accounting for 20.4% of Ghana’s total imports from China. These include motor vehicles, steel, cement, pharmaceuticals, and household electronics.
Trade Balance and Economic Impact
Despite strong trade ties, Ghana’s trade balance with China remains largely in favor of China. In December 2024, Ghana imported $1.06 billion worth of goods from China while exporting only $83.8 million, resulting in a trade deficit of approximately $975 million.
Throughout 2024, Ghana’s total imports fluctuated, dropping from $1.32 billion in November to $1.263 billion in December. However, China’s steady export flow to Ghana played a crucial role in stabilizing the local supply chain and meeting consumer demand.
