Health Minister Convenes Meeting to Address Systemic Healthcare Challenges

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, held a meeting with the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) executives, medical directors, and hospital superintendents to discuss the nation’s healthcare system.

The focus of the meeting was on key challenges, such as the rise in medical-legal cases that threaten the reputation of healthcare facilities and strain the nation’s finances.

Hon. Akandoh addressed the persistent audit infractions, which highlight failures in accountability. He called for stricter financial discipline and full compliance with procurement regulations. He also mentioned that the unchecked recruitment of casual staff is draining Internally Generated Funds (IGF), which harms service delivery and financial sustainability.

Regarding operational issues, the Minister pointed out that frequent equipment breakdowns and delayed maintenance are not just resource issues. They reflect poor management practices. He urged the adoption of regular maintenance and stronger oversight.

Another concern raised was the recurring shortages of medical supplies, which negatively impact care quality. Hon. Akandoh reassured stakeholders that reforms are in progress to enhance supply chain management.

The Minister also highlighted the lack of functional emergency services and insufficient disability-friendly infrastructure, stressing that future health projects will focus on these areas.

Hon. Akandoh acknowledged the vital role of frontline healthcare professionals and administrators in maintaining public health. He restated the Ministry’s commitment to proactive engagement with stakeholders to reform policies and strengthen the healthcare system.
