President Mahama Launches Ghana Medical Trust Fund for Chronic Disease Care

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, to support individuals with chronic diseases in Ghana.

The Fund will cover treatment and medication for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that are not part of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It will also invest in health infrastructure, medical equipment, specialist training, and research to improve healthcare access.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama called the Fund a critical part of his government’s goal to create a resilient and inclusive health system. He stressed that MahamaCares will provide specialist-level treatment for chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke.

He also emphasized the need for collective action to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of income or location, receives essential healthcare.

Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh praised the initiative, calling it a major step toward greater equity in healthcare. He acknowledged President Mahama’s deep empathy for those struggling with chronic NCDs.

Minister Akandoh urged all agencies under the Ministry of Health, as well as collaborating institutions, to fully support the Fund’s implementation. He also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare to all Ghanaians, with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund playing a central role.

The event brought together key health sector stakeholders, civil society groups, and development partners, all committed to ensuring the success of this transformative initiative.
